My name is Maurie Keppens, from Belgium. I started my PhD in September 2024 co-supervised by Prof. Griet Neukermans and dr. Peter Landschützer of the PPFC group (VLIZ). The overall objective of this joint VLIZ-MarSens PhD research is to investigate the inorganic carbon component in the Belgian Part of the North Sea and to assess the impact of extreme events on coastal carbon dynamics, both in Belgian waters and globally. I will use a combination of satellite data, in situ observations of dissolved inorganic carbon and air-sea CO2 fluxes, and machine learning tools. My work will contribute to the BERNARDO and the AI4PEX projects.
I hold a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Bioscience Engineering from UGent, specializing in Land, Water, and Climate. Throughout my studies, I gained valuable international experience through an Erasmus+ exchange in Montréal, an internship with HUMASOL installing a water purification system in Uganda (summer 2023), and a thesis at the University of Queensland’s Marine Spatial Ecology Lab (Australia), researching the century-long vulnerability of the Great Barrier Reef to tropical cyclones.
I am excited to join the MarSens team, which brings together diverse expertise in a truly international and collaborative environment!
